Malawi has a wide variety of fabulous places to explore depending on your area of interest. Contact us to dial in on the focus for your trip or to combine a visit to several places for the ultimate adventure.
Widely considered to be the jewel of Malawi, Lake Malawi was once described by David Livingstone as the “Lake of Stars”. It is the third largest lake in Africa and is situated in the southernmost area of Africa’s Great Rift Valley. Resorts, lodges and self-catering accommodation are dotted all along the lakeshore from as far north as Nkhata Bay, down to Chinteche and further south to Cape Maclear. Scuba divers will not be disappointed as the lake hosts the largest number of freshwater species in the world. If you prefer to stay above water, catch a boat ride to see fish eagles or paddle your way around in a kayak. For a truly unforgettable lake experience, take the ferry to Likoma Island or check out some of the other islands.
If sun and sand are not your thing, Malawi hosts a number of special opportunities for hikers and peak baggers. Mount Mulanje, the highest peak in central Africa, rises up to over 3,000 metres above sea level at its highest point and is the most popular hiking destination in the country. For the less ambitious, Zomba plateau offers amazing views as well and a unique set of flora and fauna.
Nature lovers can take their pick from a plethora of game parks and reserves such as Nyika Plateau, Majete, Liwonde and Lengwe National Parks. Each one of these protected areas offers the opportunity for both guided or self-drive safaris as well as walking safaris. Lengwe National Park, in particular, is a birders paradise, and both Liwonde and Majete contain all five of Africa’s Big Five animals. Boat safaris on the river are also available in both Liwonde and Majete and offer an amazing up close experience with hippos, elephants, crocodiles and water birds.
Jambo Africa also proudly supports the preservation of local culture and heritage in the Lower Shire Valley by organizing cultural evenings in the village of Ndakwera. On these evenings a group of at least four visitors can visit the village and see how people live, how some of the traditional meals are prepared, rituals are preformed, and even enjoy such a meal while watching traditional masked dances.
