Airboat Safaris

EXPERIENCE the thrill of an airboat ride whilst also taking in the breathatking beauty of one of Malawi’s hidden birding gems – Elephant Marsh.

Please note that this is a seasonal activity.

EXCURSIONS Although the MV. EMM can legally carry 12 passengers, tourist groups are limited to a maximum of 9 people, to allow space for passengers to wear life vests and bring any photographic equipment on board.  Special consideration for passenger numbers will be considered in the event of some of the passengers being children.  For school groups, the boat can seat 11 children and one adult.

Trips are between one and three hours in duration, depending on the following factors:

  • Weather, it can be extremely hot
  • Marsh water levels, variation occurs during the course of the year.
  • Arrival time of guests at Kaombe

THE EXPERIENCE As mentioned above, the Elephant Marsh is now a RAMSAR Site. The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance is an international treaty for the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands, especially Waterfowl Habitats.

The airboat is the most efficient way of getting around the Marsh and the experience itself is fantastic. Since it is flat-bottomed and does not have a motor in the water it is able to travel in very shallow conditions as well as over wetland vegetation without causing damage. It also allows you to travel quickly to places you would not otherwise be able to in a conventional vessel. “The Elephant Marsh”, named by the Scottish explorer/Missionary David Livingstone during his expedition into the African interior, came across herds of up to 800 elephants whilst traveling on his steam boat here.

At this point, there are no more elephants to be seen but the occasional crocodile and hippo are visible. However, the highlight is the exceptional scenery and the huge abundance of bird life, not forgetting to mention the incredible skills of the fishermen when launching their throw nets, all of which provide stunning photographic opportunities.

Due to the use of fan power the noise levels of the vessel are high especially when powering up and on the plain.  Guests are provided with ear protection for this and it seems that it does not disturb the birds too much when approaching them. They are becoming more accustomed to the particular noise in the short time the boat has been used in the Marsh.

WHAT TO BRING Hat, sun block, a bottle of drinking water (a must), photographic equipment, binoculars and sun glasses (optional).

You can bring your own packed meals and drinks or if staying at Nyala Lodge those can be provided for you at an extra cost.

AGE RESTRICTION Unfortunately we do not allow children below the age of 8 years, although dispensation can be given for children as young as six years if parents/guardian can guarantee the child/children will not become a problem to other guests.

INDEMNITY Please note all passengers are required to sign an indemnity form. In the event of a disaster situation, should the boat be required by the Department of Disaster Management, all conflicting pre-bookings will be cancelled and a full refund will be given the client or the trip will be rescheduled when the boat becomes available.
