09:00 hours
On arrival at Lusaka International Airport, you will be met by a Robin Pope Safaris’ representative who will have a name board with your names. He/She will assist you with immigration and customs clearing then check in for your flight to Mfuwe, South Luangwa.
The flight is on average one hour. At Mfuwe International Airport a guide from Robin Pope Safaris will meet you and transfer you by vehicle to Luangwa River Camp, through colorful local scenes of villages, agriculture as well as bush.
The camp is located on the banks of the Luangwa River overlooking a very game rich area of the South Luangwa National Park and is ideally situated for the start of your safari.
All rooms have a view of the river. Depending on your arrival time, you may enjoy a scrumptious lunch followed by siesta before heading off to the park for your first game activity which you may opt to extend into a night drive.
Often you will get up before dawn so you’re in the park in time for the fantastic dawn light – the camp ideally has access to the park by boat ride (and in drier months we drive across the dry river) so it takes only a few swift minutes.
After enjoying a delicious lunch, you can choose to relax during siesta, read a good book or simply lounge and enjoy your surroundings.
After a refreshing cup of tea or coffee and scrumptious cake you go back to the park to find even more game in the afternoon and evening, returning to camp for dinner around 20:30hours.
After an early breakfast, a game drive through the park and across the river takes you into the exclusive Nsefu Sector, which is recognized as a phenomenal game viewing area; taking you to Tena Tena.
The camp sits nestled under a magnificent and thick grove of mahogany trees. On a double tiered river bank each of the 5 tents enjoys its own private view onto a long stretch of the Luangwa River.
Tena Tena is synonymous with Robin Pope Safaris as it was the first camp which Robin opened and ran and has become a firm favorite amongst many safari lovers over the years.
During your stay you have the opportunity to drive or walk through the ebony groves or, depending on the heat and time of year, to explore further afield with an all day picnic drive to the salt pans that will cover different habitats and is an exceptional day’s safari.
There is also the option of visiting the community at Kawaza Village to experience life in a real non-tourist village.
For the shoppers…there is Tribal textiles for locally printed materials that are made in various items (bags, clothes, bedding and more); great place to pick up some souvenirs or gifts for friends and family.
Mwaleshi is a short flight from Mfuwe; the views from the plane’s window you will enjoy include the meandering Luangwa River full of hippos and a chance to spot other game amongst the ox-bow lakes. A ten minute drive from the airstrip will see you arrive at Mwaleshi Camp.
This owner run camp consists of four reed and grass chalets situated on the Mwaleshi River, a clear perennial tributary of the Luangwa River. The remoteness of the camp is enhanced by the lack of roads. Game viewing is primarily on foot and it is also possible to do a drive and walking day trip to the Mwaleshi Falls. The park is very remote and wild – a place for real bush lovers to visit.
This morning a more leisurely start to the day with breakfast after which we pack up and return back to Lilongwe. A picnic lunch is eaten en route and ETA in the city is 1500.
A free drop off service is offered in Lilongwe
